General FAQ's
What makes MEL candles different from other beeswax candles?
MEL candles are crafted with third-party tested, 100% pure Portuguese beeswax, ensuring a clean and natural burn free from additives, toxins, or synthetic fragrances. We take a deeply intentional approach to every step of the process—sourcing our beeswax sustainably, using natural plant-based dyes for select candles, and embracing traditional artisanal methods. Our candles are designed not just for illumination, but for ritual, connection, and mindful living. When you choose MEL, you’re choosing a candle that honors the bees, the environment, and the beauty of slow, intentional craftsmanship.
Are your candles 100% pure beeswax?
Yes, MEL candles are made with 100% pure beeswax, without any paraffin, soy, or other wax blends or additives. Our beeswax is third-party tested to ensure its purity and quality, guaranteeing a clean, non-toxic burn. The only addition to some of our candles is a natural cotton wick and, in select cases, plant-based pigments for color. We believe in honoring the integrity of beeswax, allowing its natural properties—like its subtle honey aroma and air-purifying benefits—to shine through.
Where is your beeswax sourced from?
We source our beeswax exclusively from Portuguese apiaries that prioritize sustainable and ethical beekeeping practices. By working with responsible beekeepers, we support practices that protect the health of bee populations while maintaining the integrity of the wax.
Do your candles contain any additives or fragrances?
No, MEL candles are completely free from synthetic additives, artificial fragrances, and chemical enhancers. We believe in preserving the purity of beeswax, allowing its natural light honey aroma to subtly scent your space. For our colored candles, we use only organic plant-based pigments derived from natural sources like indigo, paprika, and matcha—never synthetic dyes. Our commitment to simplicity and purity ensures that every MEL candle burns cleanly, safely, and in harmony with nature.
Do you use synthetic dyes in your colored candles?
natural plant pigments, never synthetic dyes. We believe in keeping our candles as natural as possible, which is why we use botanical ingredients like indigo leaf powder, paprika, and matcha to create rich, earthy tones. These natural dyes not only align with our commitment to sustainability but also ensure that our candles remain free from artificial additives or harmful chemicals.
Because we use natural pigments, slight variations in color may occur—this is part of the beauty of working with organic materials. Each candle is unique, just like the natural world that inspires it.
Product & Candle Care
How should I care for my beeswax candle for the best burn?
Proper candle care ensures a longer, cleaner burn. To get the most out of your MEL beeswax candle, follow simple steps like trimming the wick, allowing a full wax pool to form, and burning in a draft-free area.
For a full guide on burning tips and best practices, check out our Candle Care & Burning Tips page.
Why is there sometimes a white film (bloom) on my candle?
The white film, known as bloom, is a natural characteristic of pure beeswax. It develops over time as the natural oils in the wax rise to the surface, creating a soft, powdery appearance. This is a sign of high-quality, 100% pure beeswax and does not affect the candle’s performance.
If you prefer a polished look, you can easily remove bloom by gently rubbing the candle with a soft cloth or warming it slightly with your hands.

How do I properly trim the wick?
Keeping your candle wick trimmed is essential for a clean and even burn. Before each use, trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch) to prevent excessive flickering, soot, and uneven burning.
For best results, use wick trimmers or scissors to make a clean cut. If the wick becomes too long while burning, extinguish the candle, let the wax harden, and then trim before relighting.

Can I reuse the wax from my candle?
Yes! Leftover beeswax can be repurposed in several ways instead of going to waste. You can melt it down to make new candles, wax melts, or even use it for DIY projects like wax wraps or wood polish.
Even better, MEL offers a Wax Recycling Program, where you can send in your leftover beeswax, and in return, receive a fresh MEL candle. This initiative ensures that every bit of wax gets a second life while supporting a sustainable, closed-loop system.
